We have had many visitors to the home, entertainers, guest speakers, fitness instructors, animals both small and large and therapists and beauticians and we welcome them all, but I don’t think any of them have stirred up quite as much excitement as this week’s visitor, The Hot Donut van.
We knew we had a treat on the way, so we all peered out of the window like children on Christmas Eve, hoping for a glimpse of Santa. Santa didn’t arrive but the donut van did, and we were very happy to see it pull into the car park.
There is something about the smell of fresh doughnuts that transports you instantly to seaside holidays, bag of doughnuts in hand. They were always too hot to eat, and they burned your fingers through the paper bag, but none of that mattered, the sun was shining, the seagulls were hovering, and we were happy, very happy.
The weather has been very mild for October and the sun was out providing the perfect climate for our car park doughnut picnic. We gathered around the van just taking in the aromas, we were quickly joined by the team and even some passing workmen who were lured over by the smell.
They were just as I remembered, too hot to eat immediately but once cooled a little, they were delicious. We stood in the October sun, sharing our tales of doughnuts past, of hungry seagull attacks and sandcastle construction. We remembered our caravan holidays and carrying tired children along the beach.
We ate too many doughnuts but still took a bag inside with us to have with a cup of tea later. What a lovely morning we had, we look forward to more visits from the donut van, sooner rather than later please.
