Jack was born in May 1921 and has just celebrated his 101st birthday. It is hard to comprehend the changes that Jack has witnessed throughout his life. Born in the shadow of the First World War in a world that was still recovering from the Spanish Flu global pandemic, times were tough. Jack was 18 when the Second World War broke out and the life that he had known was over. In his lifetime Jack has seen 3 British Kings and 1 Queen and 19 prime ministers including David Lloyd George, a Liberal politician who won the 1918 election by a landslide, an election that saw women vote for the first time. Jack has seen man land on the moon, the invention of the World Wide Web, the construction, and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first woman prime minister and the invention of the television.
Jack celebrated his birthday all day long, initially with his family, enjoying a lovely meal, and then, as requested at a cocktail party with fellow residents. The lifestyle team really did him proud, decorating the Sky Bar with a multitude of photographs of Jack depicting his time at Timken Grange. Jack had a wonderful day and was blown away by the generosity of all who came along. Jack received gifts from Timken Grange along with a huge array of cards including 80 cards made by the children of Millway and Bilsworth Primary schools. He received cards from team members, both past and present and even from the families of other residents.
It is a real pleasure having Jack around, he has travelled extensively and has an almost endless catalogue of fascinating tales and photographs from his adventures.
We were honoured to be a part of these celebrations, it’s not every day that you’re invited to a 101st birthday party.
