The word spa is an acronym of the Latin phrase ‘Salus per Aquam’ meaning health from water. It is widely assumed that the use of spa treatments dates to Roman times however there is evidence of these spa-style therapies dating back thousands of years.
Spa days are a relatively new pastime; they weren’t commonplace when I was younger. Spa days became popular in the 80s but even then, they were mostly enjoyed by the wealthy, the ladies who lunch; it was around 20 years later that they become accessible to the masses and are popular with hen parties and as birthday treats.
I have never had the pleasure of visiting a spa, they kind of passed me by which is why I look forward so eagerly to our spa days here at Kingfisher Court. They are so relaxing.
We all meet up in our cinema room; it is such a beautiful room; we use it for many activities as it has such a lovely feel about it and lends itself well to any theme.
The room is set up perfectly, the lighting is subdued, there is a beautiful aroma of citrus and bergamot in the air. The table is laid out with glasses of Prosecco and chocolates and the sounds of the bubbling foot spas greet us as we take our seats.
We start off with a glass of fizz and a foot spa; the warm water soothes away the aches and pains and I begin to feel my whole body relax. We listen to the calming music and just drift off, enjoying the peace. This is the life.
The session always becomes more upbeat after the foot spa treatments. The team massage our feet and apply moisturiser while we sip our bubbles and polish off the chocolates.
Next comes the glamour, we have our nails manicured and polished and our faces cleansed and moisturised; we sit around in face masks and laugh at how ridiculous we all look. We have head massages and hair treatments and finish the session with another glass of fizz and a good old catch up.
I’m always sorry when the session comes to an end; I wish that these therapies had been available when my friends and I got together all those years ago. Not only are they fun but they leave you feeling wonderful, they really raise the spirits. I can’t say I’m surprised that they have become so popular recently, I’m only surprised that it took them so long.
