Letter writing is a lost art, my parents wrote to each other often whilst courting and keep every letter, they were placed safely in a box, a wonderful love story to be revisited on rainy Sunday afternoons.
The majority of homes didn’t have telephones, and for those that did, it was for emergency use only or for matters of importance. It was commonplace to drop a note in the post box to family and friends and every home would have had a supply of note paper, envelopes, and stamps at the ready.
How times have changed, a landline telephone became commonplace and affordable, and the art of letter writing was soon assigned to history.
Over the last two years the use of technology to connect with our loved ones has fast taken over from the humble telephone. I hadn’t expected to become proficient at Facetime calls and online meetings at my age, but I have, and it has been wonderful.
This week we decided to take a trip back in time, no technology just some craft supplies and a pen. We had a lovely time designing and creating cards and then spent the afternoon writing inside them. We wrote to our families and our friends, we recounted stories and sent love and best wishes. We applied the stamps and sent the cards on their way.
It is lovely to be able to catch up with our families over Zoom or to chat to them on our mobile phones, but it was really special to be able to send them something so personal, they will get such a surprise when they land on their doormat and maybe we’ll receive a reply, that would be very special indeed.
